Explore our curated resources, join us in Athens, and prepare to thrive together as part of the Bulldog Nation. Welcome to the family, and as always, Go Dawgs!

UGA family orientation

Parents, family members, and any individuals who are a part of a student’s support system, are welcome to attend New Student Orientation. During sessions, parents and family members will participate in a separate schedule that focuses on the tools, resources, and information necessary to provide the best support to your new Georgia Bulldog. These sessions will include topics such as housing, financial aid, health resources, campus safety, academics, and many other facets of the student experience. You will also have the chance to connect with current students and other new UGA families.

When the student registers for a session, they can add the name(s) and email address(es) of the guest(s) they would like to accompany them to orientation. To add another, update the email address, or remove a guest, your student can login through the same portal and manually update the guest information there.

Parents and family members will have the opportunity to hear presentations from University Housing, UGA PD, Auxiliary Services, and various other campus offices and resources. They will also have the chance to chat with current students and connect with other UGA families.

Parents and family members are able to eat in Bolton Dining Commons at a discounted orientation rate. There are also retail locations available in the Tate Student Center and Miller Learning Center.

When eating in Athens, we encourage you to check out the Visit Athens Restaurant Guide.

UGA PARENT AND FAMILY MODULES

As your students begin their journey at UGA, we know that parents and family members are so important to a successful transition for our newest Bulldogs. To this end, we have created a parent/family version of the UGA 101 modules that all incoming students must complete this summer. The parent and family modules are a great way for you all to learn more about the resources, opportunities, and programs available at UGA.

To access the modules, click the button below and create a guest login. The modules include a welcome from current students, information on various programs, and much more.

What to expect

With New Student Orientation just a few days away, you probably have a few questions about what to expect. Whether it’s your first time taking a student to college orientation or you’ve done this before, Orientation can feel a little overwhelming for families as well as students. To help ease any concerns, we’ve compiled a list of things to expect as you prepare for Orientation at UGA.

Throughout Orientation, there will be sessions specifically designed for parents and families, while your student will head off to their own activities. These moments of separation are intentional, allowing your student to start building their connections on campus and fostering independence. It’s a great opportunity for them to begin navigating their new environment, and it’s also a chance for you to connect with other Bulldog parents. Remember, your support is invaluable, but giving your student the space to grow is part of the process.

Orientation is not only about equipping students with vital information but also ensuring families have the knowledge they need to feel confident. Make sure to attend UGA’s parent and family sessions, where you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and engage with representatives from essential campus offices, such as Financial Aid, Housing, Dining Services, and Health Services. These sessions are designed to provide clarity and help you feel connected to the resources that will support your student throughout their time at UGA.

Your student is about to embark on an incredible journey at UGA, and our campus will become their second home. Take the time to familiarize yourself with this vibrant community. Enjoy a meal at one of our dining halls, visit the residence halls during check-in, and explore iconic spaces like Sanford Stadium and the Tate Student Center. UGA is about to play a pivotal role in your student’s life—discovering its offerings will help you better understand their new world.

Orientation is packed with valuable information, and it can be challenging to remember everything. Bring a notebook or your favorite digital device to jot down details, contact information for key offices, and tips shared during the sessions. Knowing where to direct your student when they encounter challenges—whether related to academics, housing, or campus life—will empower you to support them effectively.

Sending your student to college is a big milestone, and it’s natural to feel a mix of emotions. Nervousness, excitement, and even a little apprehension are all part of the process. Trust in your student’s ability to make decisions and navigate this new chapter. College is a transformative time, and Orientation is their first step toward becoming a self-sufficient adult. By encouraging them to take the lead while remaining a supportive partner, you’re setting them up for success.

Orientation is an exciting time for you and your student, and we’re thrilled to welcome you both to the Bulldog Nation. This experience is the start of a lifelong connection to UGA, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. As always, Go Dawgs!
